October 4, 2009 - Premature elections in Greece

Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis has announced premature elections for the 4th of October 2009. Synaspismos is mobilized all over Greece for the forthcoming battle. Its Central Political Committee met on Sunday, 6 September 2009, to discuss certain issues of electoral campaign.

It was reiterated that the party will contest the elections through the Coalition of Radical Left (SYRIZA).

The following statement was issued after its works and it was approved by a large majority.

Our decisions are the following:
1. The SYRIZA electoral list will be submitted to the High Court (Arios Pagos)by the leaders of all its components. This procedure is provided by the law for party alliances. The President of SYNASPISMOS will be the first to sign. There will be no leader of the coalition. The chairpersons of the components will be the de facto leaders of the electoral struggle on behalf of their components as well as of the unitary list.
2. The State list will be made up only of left wing personalities from the fields of culture and science.
3. The Chairperson of the new Parliamentary Group that will emerge from the elections will be elected by the members of the Group themselves according to its working rules in a democratic way.
4. Every effort should be made to interpret the law positively in order to allow the first among the chairpersons who will submit the list, that is the SYNASPISMOS President, to have no limits to his public appearance by the radio and television council during the electoral campaign.
