N.Constantopoulos’ statement on the death of Yasser Arafat

Arafat is Palestine: the symbol of a nation’s struggle for its freedom and its land. The international community, which is going to honour him after death, left him defenceless, a free man under siege. They honoured him with the Nobel Peace Prize but deserted him by ignoring the justice of his struggle.

We share the devastation of the Palestinian people. We are near to all those people, both in Palestine and in Israel and in the whole world, who are earnestly seeking peace in the region and call for peaceful co-existence of Israel and Palestine.

We express our wish that the Palestinians, united, overcome this trial. The establishment of peace and stability in the Middle East concerns the whole world. It concerns Greece. It concerns Europe, which can and should play a decisive role.
