This move, undertaken by right wing parliamentarians representatives of national Parliaments, 15 years after the end of the cold war and while we are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the antifascist victory in World War II , is part of the effort to rewrite history and is driven by the logic that views communism and fascism as identical.
The particular resolution proposal, utterly beyond this body’s jurisdiction, attempts to turn the Council of Europe into an ideological court of law, something inadmissible for an institution that has contributed greatly to the case of democracy and human rights.
Given these facts this proposal should be withdrawn and not be submitted for discussion to the plenary.
SYNASPISMOS, having a clear stance towards the bureaucratic and authoritarian states of the so called “existing socialism” and struggling for socialism with democracy and freedom, cannot accept the incrimination of ideological views which help to turn the focus away from today’s critical struggles for a socially aware, peaceful and democratic Europe, where human rights will be respected as an ecumenical and non-negotiable value.
