Synaspismos expresses its complete opposition to the actions of the Estonian authorities to “reposition” anti-fascist monuments dedicated to the Red Army, in spite of the international outcry. We are also opposed to the police violence exercised on protesting demonstrators in Talinn.
Our party has repeatedly expressed, its disapproval of actions, which attempt a re-writing of the history of World War II. It is especially sad that these events take place at this particular time, a few days before the 9th of May, the day of the antifascist victory.

“To Mr. Andres Unga
Ambassador of Estonia
AthensYour Excellency,
The antifascist victory in World War II, one of the pinnacles of 20th Century History, whose repercussions are still affecting the course of Europe - constitutes a most valuable common heritage of all the peoples of our continent. And the task to preserve historical memory and respect, especially all those who gave their lives to the giant struggle for the liberation of Europe from fascism/nazism, befalls all of us.
That’s why we were unpleasantly surprised upon learning that the Estonian Parliament is discussing a law draft (a law proposal) for the destruction of Soviet soldiers monuments, who were killed during this war.
We appeal for the withdrawal of this measure.
The revision of history in the name of opportunist political expediencies does not contribute to a common European future
And the definitive contribution of the Soviet Union to the defeat of fascism in the framework of the anti-Hitler alliance cannot be questioned seriously. Furthermore, there are monuments dedicated to the Soviet Soldiers in many European countries, including Germany.
As you know, Greece experienced the tragedy of occupation and the glory of the popular uprising against fascism-nazism, paying a heavy price. In addition, the party which I am honoured to represent in the Greek Parliament counts among its members and supporters many representatives of the generation that waged the antifascist struggle. Whatsmore, we have supported the erection of a similar monument in the Municipality of Kalithea ( in the Athens metropolitan area) to honour the Russian soldiers who died during World War II. As a consequence, our sensitivity on the issue is self-explanatory.
Please convey this letter to the Parliament and government of your country.”
