On 10 July 2002, the Political Secretariat of SYNASPISMOS issued the following statement:
1. Synaspismos, fully aware of its responsibility, would like to express its strong opposition to the conditions created these days in relation to the investigation for the dismantling of the terrorist group of "17 November".
2. For us, the Greek Left, as for the Greek society as a whole, that terrorism has always been a horrible and criminal phenomenon. That is why, we were and are always ready to support every step against it, in the framework of constitutional legality.
The investigation for the dismantling of "17 November" must be continued and get to the bottom undistracted from internal, external and media pressures and other expediencies. At the same time political and constitutional rights must be respected.
3. But, it is necessary to avert a situation, which is being created during the last days with irresponsible "scenarios" the defaming of people and of the anti - dictatorship struggle and the use of the methods testing the constitutional limits. The Greek society wants full light to be shed in this case, but is opposed to becoming witness or even more to participating in police scenarios, which cause confusion, create a climate of fear and smear movements and militants
4. The effort to dismantle this terrorist group should not in any case lead to damaging democracy and for decisions towards an authoritarian state and reinforcement of mechanisms limiting human rights and freedom. For us, the defeat of terrorism should be a victory and not a test for democracy.
